Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D major, Op 35
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No 5 in E minor, Op 64

One of Russia’s most prestigious and versatile orchestras opens this year’s Festival with a block-buster programme. To begin, Vaughan Williams’ ethereal Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis evokes a feeling of grave beauty and quintessential Englishness.

In contrast, to follow, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto - one of his best known and most technically demanding works which originated from the composer’s despair but became one of his most triumphant creations. Requiring a soloist of ‘dazzling interpretative flair and exemplary technique’ (Classic FM) the Festival is delighted to welcome Jennifer Pike who gained international recognition in 2002 when, aged 12, she became the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician title.

The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s elemental 5th Symphony – a particular treat that no music lover should miss.
