WEB POTY Winner 2013

The winner of the Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year 2013 has been announced at a celebration evening at the wonderful Dominican Priory in Canterbury on Thursday 3 October 2013. The evening was attended by the short-listed and long-listed poets and their guests.

Local poet Gillian Laker took the top prize for his memorable poem, Anglo Saxon Brooch and she was awarded a £50 book token from Waterstone’s, the sponsors of the event and half a case of wine, courtesy of The Wine Room in Tankerton.  Two prizes were awarded to the runners-up; Victoria Field for Group Therapy, and Roger James for Murano.

A bottle of English sparkling wine (also from The Wine Room) for the Best Read on the night went to Hubert Moore for Mumuration for Eddie and the People’s Choice was decided via a secret vote during the interval and the winner, Clifford Liles with his poem, Winterreisen, received a £20 book token from Waterstone’s Canterbury.

The judges for the evening were Nancy Gaffield (winner of the Aldeburgh Prize 2011) and Graham Burchell (Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year 2012) and third judge, Luigi Marchini, also acted as compere for the evening. Luigi is the Chair of the local SaveAs Writers Group, for more information, see their website www.saveaswriters.co.uk.

The poetry readings by the shortlisted poets and by the judges, were interspersed with musical delights from Richard Navarro, talented local singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Canterbury.

Over 180 entries were submitted for this year’s competition. Thirty-two poems made the judges’ long-list and have been included in a poetry anthology. Priced at £3, it is available from the Canterbury Festival Office, 8 Orange Street, Canterbury.
