Developing Kent's Young Dancers
Applications are now open for Canterbury Festival’s annual dance competition for individual dancers and troupes aged between 16-24.
Made in Kent: Dance 2019 is a performance opportunity for early stage career dance groups or soloists to perform in a showcase at Anselm Theatre, Canterbury Christ Church University on Wednesday 30th October 2019 for Canterbury Festival. We are looking for dancers from across Kent, covering all dance styles.
Winners of this year’s competition will be awarded:
- £150 development fee
- A development day including feedback and mentoring with Ash Mukherjee and Lea Anderson MBE
- Performance showcase during Canterbury Festival
- Featured in Canterbury Festival brochure in print and online
- On the day venue technical and stage manager for your performance
We are delighted to welcome both the hugely talented Ash Mukherjee and Lea Anderson MBE to the Made in Kent: Dance team for 2019. They individually bring a wealth of experience and knowledge across multiple disciplines and will provide valuable guidance to the winners.
Lea Anderson MBE is a British choreographer, filmmaker and artistic director who has founded two prestigious dance companies. Her choreography has won a multitude of awards including an Olivier award. In 2002 Lea was awarded an MBE for Services to Dance in the Queen’s birthday honours list and has been artist in residence at the Southbank Centre, Critical Path, Sydney and the University of California amongst others.
Ash Mukherjee was born in Kolkata, India and trained at Kalamandalam Kolkata. Ash was promoted to principal dancer at just age thirteen. He then studied classical ballet at London Studio Centre with Brenda Last. Ash was handpicked by Michael Jackson’s team for This Is It! at O2 London. He also appeared in BBC Three’s Move like Michael Jackson.
In 2009 he was acclaimed by Dance Europe magazine as the best Indian classical dancer in Great Britain. Ash is an acclaimed choreographer and works include Song of The City for Southwark Playhouse Vaults, The Meeting Place and Affluenza for The Place Theatre & Salaam India for Commonwealth Games.
