Made in Kent: Theatre
Made in Kent Theatre competition winners Weighty Bowl wrote and developed The Lamentable Tragedie of the Canterbury Stranger, which was chosen out of thirteen entries to the 2017 competition. The theatre company was comprised of former University of Kent students, who had written and developed the play as an end of year project.
Liz Flynn, participation manager at Canterbury Festival and organiser at Made in Kent said that ‘What we really loved about Weighty Bowl was that they were just starting out their journey as a theatre company and the show seemed to be a perfect balance of tragedy and farcical comedy. That nod towards the Jacobean was also a nice link to Canterbury’s rich history’. The performance was an evening of comic verse and plenty of Jacobean ruffs.
Weighty Bowl presents this definitely not made up and completely serious play by an anonymous Jacobean playwright, circa 1615.
It tells the tragic tale of Grace, the glover’s daughter whose suitors are all being murdered by the mysterious Canterbury Strangler. Tragedy, romance and intrigue blossom as the lowly Lieutenant Dick and Constable Shins attempt to capture the Strangler.
Come along for verse, violence, and veritable nonsense. And ruffs.
Made in Kent is the Festival’s framework for supporting Kent-based performers at the start of their professional creative careers.
