Not Just for October – a year-round festival

A look at the festival events and projects throughout the year and how to get involved

The Canterbury Festival is a year-round organisation. As you put next year’s dates in your diary, remember that whilst the Festival maintains its international programme of over two hundred events around the City every autumn, barely a month goes by without a fundraising occasion or community project.

The Friends of the Festival organise events and activities ranging from the annual Christmas Concert in the beautiful and atmospheric St Paul’s Church in Canterbury to the prestigious Poet of the Year competition supported by the University of Kent. The competition is now in its thirteenth year. The year 2019 will also see our Festival Friends hosting an archaeological  and a vineyard walk and the return of the summer jazz afternoon at elegant Barham Court. Check the website, or, even better, join the Friends to receive more details.

Also in the spring of 2019, watch out for the return of the Globe Theatre to the stunning setting of Chilham Castle with a new Shakespeare performance.

Opportunities to take part in the Festival have never been greater. Made in Kent, the Festival’s ongoing framework to support local performers at the start of their careers includes, as always, opportunities for local musicians, comedians and dancers. The search continues through the year. As well as this, the Festival’s annual classical music competition for young people has supported the talent of some of Ken’s finest musicians.

The Festival also offers professional development and training for artists and facilitators in East Kent.

Participation in the Festival itself is always  a rewarding experience. Schools, community groups and musicians of all kinds work to make an opening parade bursting with colour and sound. Why not consider volunteering for the Canterbury Festival to be one of your New Year resolutions ? Our friendly team of volunteer stewards, many of whom come back to the Festival year after year, provide a full range of front-of-house and customer care throughout the events in October. As well as the chance to be part of the biggest arts festival in the region, you will share in world-class performances.

Remember, come back and see the website soon and make the Canterbury Festival your year-round event.
