We are delighted to present Hansel & Gretel – a 60-minute work for five musicians, a narrator and two puppeteers. Chamber music, shadow-play and animation combine in a grown-up version of an old tale. Against a dark, witty and twisted fairy-tale landscape, contemporary themes of greed and home-coming are explored during a helter-skelter journey and feasts of sugar.

The words of poet Simon Armitage’s extended lyrical poem entwine with chamber music by composer Matthew Kaner, one of the most original voices of his generation. With shadowplay and puppetry by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, Hansel & Gretel presents an evocative collection of art-forms, drawing audiences into a mysterious yet curiously familiar landscape.
