Harry McNish, a brilliant carpenter and shipwright, was the only man ever to rebel against Sir Ernest Shackleton when the Endurance was destroyed in Antarctica. Nevertheless, McNish skilfully modified the small boat, the James Caird, that  allowed Shackleton and five men (including McNish) to make a voyage of hundreds of miles to fetch help for the rest of the crew – playing a vital role in ensuring all 28 were saved.

Now alone and destitute, he challenges Shackleton one last time. In his fevered mind he relives the Endurance expedition, pitting himself against Shackleton and plagued by the ghosts of his past.
