The Canterbury Auction Galleries will be opening its doors for an evening with George Jessel. In addition to a fascinating talk, audience members will be given the opportunity to enjoy a private view of the latest auction sale lots (a veritable treasure trove of items) while enjoying complimentary wine and nibbles.
Finding Jesselton – A talk by George Jessel
George Jessel’s first book explores the fascinating riddle of Kotakinabalu a bustling modern city in North Borneo once named Jesselton after his Great Grandfather Sir Charles James Jessel.
Cleverly intertwining modern day visits and family history, George looks at the origins of the British North Borneo Company and the involvement of Sir Charles James Jessel. Did his forebare whose name the fledgling trading post was named ever visit? Or did his association with the Company remain in London?
A very personal view of a family historical connection and the lives of those who made Jesselton a vibrant city and how the modern day Kotakinabalu still looks to its colonial past.
